Hello, I’m Shonna, and I am the founder of Vesta Custom Design. My adventure in the renovation industry started over two decades ago in millwork and design. I loved designing cabinetry and coming up with innovative concepts; but as we completed projects, more and more clients would ask if we knew anyone who could handle the full scope of their renovations. Initially, we connected them with subcontractors, but soon realized that to truly deliver the quality and coherence our clients deserved, we needed more control. And so, Vesta was born out of a desire to streamline and elevate the renovation experience.
What sets us apart at Vesta is not just our comprehensive approach but our deep commitment to understanding and integrating into the lives of our clients. We prioritize keeping renovations within the existing footprint of homes, avoiding expansions unless absolutely necessary. Our in-house team of tradespeople allows for seamless execution, and our passion for salvage and restoration often breathes unique life into every project. We see value in what was, integrating it into what will be.
One of our most challenging yet rewarding projects was the restoration of an early 1900s home. Unlike new builds, renovations are unpredictable; they require a flexible plan and a readiness to adapt to whatever lies beneath each layer. This project was a dance of preservation and innovation, where we meticulously restored historical elements while integrating modern functionality. It demanded constant collaboration and problem-solving, but the result was profoundly fulfilling—reviving a piece of history for modern living.
At Vesta, we adhere to the principle that form follows function. We believe a well-laid-out home transforms everyday living. By focusing on functionality first, we ensure that the spaces we design make life easier, not more complicated. Once we achieve functional harmony, we infuse the aesthetics that echo the personalities of those who live there.
Another favourite transformation was a project off of Pembina in 2020; we took a segmented, well loved but worn home and turned it into a vibrant, intentionally laid out, comfortable home. Opening up rooms and walls allowed to get light to flow through the entirety of the home. Through collaborative meetings with the owners and our designer we were able to give their space a new lease on life!
Are you thinking about renovations? My advice is to think deeply about your objectives. Are you renovating for resale or for personal satisfaction? Understand your home’s context, the market, and how enhancements can affect both your quality of life and future selling price. Planning with these factors in mind will guide you toward a renovation that truly feels worthwhile.
And for our future? I see Vesta continuing to innovate and expand our influence in sustainable and thoughtful renovation. The renovation landscape has changed drastically since I began; options were limited, high end finishes were expensive and hard to come by. The changing economy has taught me the the importance of adaptability, pushing Vesta to diversify our offerings and solidify our team and our resilience. We aim to keep pushing the envelope, one home at a time, contributing to the broader revitalization of neighbourhoods and communities.
Choosing to renovate with Vesta means opting for a path of personalized craftsmanship, where quality, sustainability, and design come together to create spaces that are not only functional but truly feel like home. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey to a better living space.
